“Make Your Routine the Best Part of the Day!” by Dorcas Austin
I do it because I love it !
For years I agonized over the perfect morning routine. I’ve done lots of research on routines that allow you to be most productive and successful. So what did I do? I implemented other people’s routines. I tried waking up at 4:30 a.m., running, reading books and listening to the news. The list is endless of what I tried. However, I noticed that these routines never lasted. I would quickly fall off to a point of doing nothing at all! I realized my routines didn’t work because I looked for a routine that worked for others as opposed to one that worked for me. I never asked myself, “What would you like to do first thing in the morning?” “What would make you smile to wake up?” “What could you do that would make you feel you wouldn’t have it any other way?”
The routine that I have right now has lasted the longest, almost a year, all because I love it! Right now, I write a gratitude list that feels so good. It shifts my mind from a place of, “Nothing is right to there are so many things I appreciate about my life.” Then I write my To Do List. This lets me empty my mind on paper. I no longer have to hope I remember what I need to do. I set the intention and get things done. Then I do morning pages. I take 20 minutes to write three pages of whatever comes to my head. How many times in a week can you communicate your unfiltered thoughts? I do it everyday. I read a devotional or inspirational book. Right now, I’m reading, A Course in Miracles. But it could be any book that lets me know that I am Enough. Lastly, I walk. So, in all honesty, my walking is more about listening to music and enjoying myself than getting in the most rigorous workout. You know I love that!
My advice to you: DO NOT FOLLOW MY ROUTINE! Ask yourself, what would I love to do first thing in the morning? If it’s something I’m doing… awesome! If not, that’s even better! But do it because you love it and your routine will be the best part of each day.
